Tips on How to Clean Laminate Floors

Laminate flooring is the ideal flooring option for many homeowners. Not only does it look great in any room in the house but it is also an extremely resilient material that does not easily suffer from dents and scratches like other hard flooring types.

Whether you’re living in rented accommodation which has laminate flooring, or you have chosen to install laminate flooring in your home, you will no doubt want your floor to be as shiny and clean as possible.

So, as experts in the cleaning world, the Scott and Sons team are specialists when it comes to keeping your laminate floor in tip top condition, so you can wave goodbye to those sticky and streaky patches once and for all!

Forget the broom

This may seem a rather strange concept, as people have been sweeping floors with brooms for centuries, but when it comes to laminate flooring, the traditional broom will leave behind too many dust particles. If you were then to wet mop the floor, these particles would scratch the surface leaving behind streaks and residue that will tarnish your beautiful floor!

Top Tip: Forget the broom and stick to the modern vacuum or a dust mop!

Keep the liquids away

Obviously you will need to use some form of liquid to clean the floor but you shouldn’t completely soak the surface. Excess water can seep into the gaps and cause swelling that can potentially damage the laminate material. So make sure you thoroughly wring out any mops or cloths, so they are just damp when placed on the laminate flooring.

Baby Shampoo

Don’t be taken in by expensive laminate floor cleaners that promise you everything and more. There are other alternatives out there that work just as well – if not better – and are far cheaper! Baby Shampoo is just one example. This gentle solution is kind enough to be used on babies’ skin, so is definitely kind enough to use on your floor. Pour one tablespoon of the shampoo into a bucket of warm water, mix together, wring out your mop and begin to wipe over your floors.

Buffing

To really make your floor look the part, try buffing it dry to get a beautiful shine. Invest in an ultra-absorbent or microfibre mop, then once you have cleared the floor of any dust and dirt, work in gentle circular motions with your buffer to polish your laminate floor to a squeaky, sparkly, shiny new form!

Protecting

So now you know how to properly clean your laminate floor, it’s time to start protecting it by introducing some simple and manageable steps.

If you don’t already have any, then buy some outdoor and indoor mats for the entrance of your home. This will hopefully encourage people to wipe their shoes before they enter your house, or better yet, implement a no shoes rule!

You should also make sure you deal with any spillages straight away as, if left, they are more likely to leave damaging stains on your floor that could be stubborn or even impossible to shift! Scott and Sons
