Celebrating 30 Years in Business

The team at Scott & Sons are thrilled to be celebrating their 30 year anniversary, and have taken the opportunity to look back on how it all started and how far they’ve come…

The beginning

Director of Scott & Sons, Mel Scott began his working life in the cleaning industry as a window cleaner before building his career up to become Regional Manager of a national cleaning company. The experience and insight he received from these roles gave him the essential grounding he needed to take the plunge and make the life changing decision to make a go of it himself!

The birth of Scott & Sons

Mel saw a gap in the market for a family-run cleaning business that strongly believed in going that extra mile to offer people a personal approach – something they still believe in and practice today!

It all started with a sales campaign using previous contacts Mel had made in the industry. Still finding his feet, he showed determination and commitment to his business plan by accepting sub-contracted work, offering their expert cleaning services wherever they could to clients including offices, restaurants and other commercial premises.

The business idea

Mel explains how the key is to have a solid, flawless business plan that you 100% believe in, as Mel reveals, “Any would-be entrepreneur must have a sound business plan and be able to say to the bank – this is what I want”. That’s not to say setting up your own business doesn’t mean you have to get stuck in to the hard work yourself, but Mel was fortunate enough to have the support and help from his family, as they worked together to make their dream a reality.

Family business

Mel’s wife, June Scott, was a trained personal assistant who left her job to work full time, taking care of the running of the business. Alongside Mel and June was their son, Guy Scott. Once he’d found his feet and proved his commitment and ability, he was promoted to operations director after 5 years. This was followed by Joanne Scott who joined as the company’s secretary, running the payroll and who now oversees the whole office and controls all the capacity of the accounts for Scott & Sons.

So, with these key family members now as directors of the company, business was on the increase and they soon realised they needed a few more helping hands. In light of this, they employed three secretaries and a PA to help with the administrative duties and day-to-day running of the business.

Following this, Scott & Sons continued to go from strength to strength, and after 10 years in business there called another need to expand the ever-growing team to include: 4 area managers, 8 full time cleaners, 250 office cleaners and 25 sub-contractors! So business really was booming for the Scotts!

Present day

After a nostalgic look back on Scott & Sons early days and how it came to be the reputable and successful company we know, it seems only fitting that we take a look at their achievement and milestones today, in 2015, to put into context just how far they have come!

They have recently achieved ISO accreditation in their journey to improve their company’s credibility and highlight their excellent business practices. In addition to this, Guy Scott has now completed a ‘Train the Trainer’ course to keep the whole team up-to-date and cascade the quality of working processes down through the staff.

The Contract Cleaning division continues to go from strength to strength as the company continues to work with the same ethos they started with, ensuring they are big enough to cope, whilst small enough to care. They also uphold other values set in the early days by remaining devoted to offering personal attention to all customers and staff members alike, to achieve reliability, quality and value for money.

Today’s new services

Scott & Sons now specialise in carrying out extremely efficient and effective reach and wash window cleaning, as well as offering professional carpet cleaning, floor cleaning and product sales and servicing, to encompass their 30 years in existence with 40 years experience in the industry!

Looking back, it’s clear just how much their hard work and dedication has paid off, and hopefully the family business will remain up and running for many years, and generations, to come!

Happy 30th anniversary Scott & Sons!
